Life Settlement as an Alternative Investment Strategy

A business executive from Moorestown, New Jersey, Bill Schantz serves as the CEO of Mid Atlantic Financial, LLC, a holding company that he established in 1998. Well-versed in life settlements, Bill Schantz owns and operates multiple companies, Bedrock Capital Group, Harper Financial and Senior Settlements.

A life settlement is an alternative investment strategy available to life insurance policyholders. In a life settlement, the policyholder agrees to turn over the ownership of his or her life insurance policy to a third party in exchange for an immediate cash payout. In turn, the buyer holds the right to claim the policy holder’s death benefits at the time of his or her death.

Most people buy life insurance policies to cover living expenses in case an unfortunate event happens. However, as they grow older, their dependence on life insurance changes. Soon, they find out that the original purpose of buying life insurance no longer exists. In a life settlement transaction, the policyholder can make between 10 to 25 percent of the benefit amount stated in the policy.

Pete Dye – One of Golf’s Greatest Course Architects

Consulting with attorneys, accountants, and investment banks, Bill Schantz is the chief executive officer of Mid Atlantic Financial in New Jersey. Bill Schantz is also a golf aficionado.

One of golf’s greatest course designers died in January of 2020. Pete Dye was the architect of over 100 courses, including several stops on the PGA tour. Perhaps his finest work was TPC Sawgrass, the home of The Players Championship.

Design ran in the family, as Dye’s father built a nine-hole course on his property in Urbana, Ohio, several years before his son’s birth. Pete Dye went on to become a skilled player, winning a high school state championship and the 1957 US Open. While in the US Army, he met another great course architect, Donald Ross.

Dye’s wife Alice became his business partner in the 1950s. Inspired by the renowned courses of Scotland, Pete Dye drew upon an aphorism that defined his design philosophy: Golf is not a fair game, so why build a course fair? In response, Dye created one of golf’s most iconic holes, the par-3 #17 at Sawgrass. The cup rests on a small island in the middle of the lake, a challenge to players and a delight to fans.

Other highly ranked venues created by Dye include Kiawah’s Ocean Course, the Honors Course, and the aptly named Pete Dye Course. Ultimately inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, Dye disliked following careful crafted plans to the letter, preferring instead to work hands-on in designing the landscape.

Since graduating from Villanova University in 1977, Bill Schantz has been growing his investment and insurance management portfolio. In 1998, he founded Mid Atlantic Financial. Through this firm and companies founded under its umbrella, he brokered deals with investment banks such as Bear Stearns, Deutsche Bank, and others. Bill Schantz has decades of experience dealing with insurance linked assets used as alternative investments.

Selecting alternative assets to invest in should given careful consideration. There are several considerations to keep in mind while shopping for the best alternative assets for your portfolio.

Life Settlements offer a very low volatility while targeting returns in excess of 10%. They are a non correlated asset meaning that they are independent of the stock market, real estate market, oil prices or global events. Returns are fixed at the time of investment and will not change.

Senior Settlements, LLC, an affiliate of Mid Atlantic Financial has been Originating and Servicing Life Settlement assets for more than two decades. The company conducts extensive due diligence on every policy acquisition and, in an ongoing Servicing capacity, the company optimizes premiums, tracks the insured and files and distributes death benefits at maturity.

Lastly, the original mission statement written in 1998 remains the same today, “We endeavor to foster an environment of respect, challenge and reward for all of our employees; exceed the expectations of the individuals and companies with whom we are privileged to work and maximize value to our investors”.
